Situated on the fortieth parallel you would expect that we receive our fair share of wind some people say that this is an understatement. Along with the wind we also receive our fair share of still days with only light breezes.

Rain

The average rainfall for Flinders Island is normally around 600 to  750 millimetres per year, in the old scale this is 24 to 28 inches per year. The majority of the rain falls over winter with recordings of around 80 millimetres falling in the winter months, this falls to an average of about 55 millimetres for the spring months. We often have good falls of rain over the summer with an average of about 45 to 50 millimetres and the driest months are in the autumn with an average of under 50 millimetres.

The number of rainy days vary for season to season with a as few as 5 to 8 rainy days in the autumn to 15 to 18 rainy days in the winter.

Flinders Island has a mild average temperature all year around we are saved from the extreme temperatures of the mainland in summer and the cold of the higher altitudes in the winter, we have very few frosts on the island as a result of sea breezes and our close proximity to the ocean. On occasions we have fog in the lower areas of the Island. The number of sunny days on Flinders Island can exceed a lot of the more popular tourist destinations.

The average maximum summer temperature is in the low to mid 20s whereas the maximum winter temperature is around 15 degrees. the average minimum temperature for the winter is around 3 to 5 degrees.
